WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

"Trauma Informed approaches to Treating Co-Occurring Disorders" is an overview of the science of how trauma affects the brain, creating an environment for substance abuse to be rewarding and therefore perpetuating the infinite cycle of a dual disorder. This is a workshop to gain an understanding of how imperative it is that professionals and caregivers treat both disorders simultaneously in order to help individuals stabilize and heal from both the substance abuse and the trauma.

The first day will cover information regarding trauma, PTSD and the connections between substance abuse disorders and the appropriate responses to trauma symptoms. The second day will offer information regarding the utilization of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) to treat individuals with co-occurring disorders to assist counselors in effective treatment planning.

Participants can choose either one day or experience the combination of the two days.

Day 1: When Trauma Meets Substance Abuse: Assessing and Treating Co-Occurring Substance Abuse Disorders

• Identify current research indicating the relationships between substance abuse and PTSD in women
• Define diagnostic criteria for PTSD/Complex PTSD and identify common PTSD symptoms in women with substance abuse problems
• Identify recommended screening/assessment tools for detecting PTSD/Complex PTSD symptoms in women
• Discuss the definitions and implementation of trauma-informed client and organization approaches
• Describe strategies to reduce vicarious traumatization when working with co-occurring disorders

Day2: Living in the Here and Now: Managing Co-Occurring Disorders with DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy)

• Identify the physiological, emotional and spiritual benefits of using DBT skills for healing co-occurring disorders
• Learn and practice the skills of mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal skills and distress tolerance skills
• Identify how using DBT techniques can stabilize co-occurring symptoms
• Explore the use and integration of DBT strategies with traditional 12 and 16 step program approaches to addiction treatment
• Experience and learn meditation/mindfulness techniques to teach to clients
